The boy’s been asleep for almost two hours, so I’ll have to make this quick.
I know I haven’t posted in a while; things have been barely able to be handled lately. I’ve had a serious cold recently, which is extremely rare. Even rarer is that Jessica hasn’t gotten it. Before that, Tommy had an ear infection - his first. The doctor gave him antibiotics, which really ruined his chemistry, killing off everything and he got a diaper rash of monumental proportions. (If you’ve read Jessica’s journal, this is old news.) Unfortunately, just as I was getting over my cold, Tommy got one, too. Poor little kid. It doesn’t seem too rough on him, but there’s plenty of snot for proof he has one.

Mommy is away this weekend, teaching a workshop on Roman mosaics. This week saw us busily pre-cutting tiles, cutting concrete foundation boards and the like. Thankfully, I had yesterday off. After she left, Tommy and I did some quick errands and I pulled into Chik-fil-A for dinner. This has become one of our favorite places to go. Good food, good prices, and very family friendly. That said, Tommy was really distracted while I was trying to feed him his spring vegetables and pasta. My dinner got fairly cold since he had a lot to go (Earth’s Best #3 jars are a lot for an 11-month old to eat) and he was constantly looking around at all the other people.

Tommy eating muffin and bananaI had to sneak in bites of my fries while has was distracted. You see, he likes french fries. If he saw that I had some, he’d completely eschew his dinner and want to eat mine. It’s typical. He’ll get that “Heyyy…” look on his face, point to my food, and then do the “more” sign. (He doesn’t do a lot of sign language, but he gets by pretty well with “more”, “milk”, “all done” and pointing.) So I’d feed him a bite of vegetables, he’d look away, and I’d cram an entire waffle fry into my face. He’d look back at me, and I just smile a tight-lipped smile like nothing’s out of the ordinary. The life of a dad.

When we got home, we had bath time and back downstairs to play a little bit. We all learned our lesson long ago about bath-then-bed. It doesn’t work. Bath time is like taking him to Disney World to see the Stanley Cup finals. Even after he’s done, and I’m drying him (and me) off with the towel, he’s still chanting, “DAH! DAH! DAH!” (”duck! duck! duck!”). No, he’s far too wound up to take him to bed immediately.

Not in your hair!Of course, you wouldn’t know it after breakfast. He and I split a Costco blueberry muffin and a banana. He had some cold water, and I drank yesterday’s warmed-up coffee. He’s always rubbed his face, but now he’s taken to rubbing his ears and his head. Not a pretty picture when you mix squished muffin, squished banana and snot.

Wait… I think I hear him. Back to work!
